Wearing Flip Flops Frequently May Cause Foot Conditions

Research has indicated that flip flops are not the best shoes to wear. They can be difficult to keep on the feet, and the toes may strain in an effort to keep them on. Additionally, they have limited arch support, and cracked heels may develop as a result of the open back that flip flops have. A common foot condition that could gradually develop from frequently wearing this type of shoe may include plantar fasciitis. This affects the tendon that runs along the bottom of the foot which connects the toes to the heel. It may become inflamed as a result of wearing this shoe, which generally lacks adequate support and cushioning. If you wear flip flops for the majority of your day, it may be beneficial to alternate with shoes that have a closed back. Please consult with a podiatrist if you would like additional information about how flip flops may affect the feet.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Dr. Scott Peters from Ankle & Foot Walk-In Clinic. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

What Can Cause Poor Foot Circulation?

Poor circulation in the feet occurs when the body is unable to carry sufficient amounts of blood to the area. It typically occurs as a result of blocked arteries and can cause severe pain and discomfort. The symptoms that are associated with poor circulation can include numbness, tingling, foot cramps, and difficulty walking. Some patients experience visible symptoms that may consist of dry skin, swollen feet, and the toes may appear discolored. In addition to blocked arteries, there may be other reasons that may cause poor circulation. These may include smoking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, and eating unhealthy foods. Relief may be found when the feet are frequently elevated and if a gentle exercise regime is incorporated into your daily routine.

Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact Dr. Scott Peters of Ankle & Foot Walk-In Clinic. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

What Type of Running Am I Interested In?

Research has indicated that it may be beneficial to purchase running shoes that are based on the shape of your foot. Additionally, it helps to know what type of running you are planning on doing, as this can aid you in choosing the right style of shoe. Many runners understand the importance of alternating shoes because it helps to prolong the life of the shoes. Feet are typically larger at the end of the day, which is why it’s recommended shoes are tried on at that time. An important quality to look for is a stiff heel, which provides adequate stability for the foot and ankle. If you would like additional information about the qualities to look for in running shoes, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact Dr. Scott Peters from Ankle & Foot Walk-In Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.

Foot Pain and the Holidays

People who have experienced foot pain are aware of the general discomfort that may be felt in the overall body. This may be a result of the weight the feet endure for the majority of the day. Additionally, patients who have chronic foot pain may be familiar with depression, the fear of falling, and it may be difficult to perform daily activities.  Many patients have pain in the arch and heel area. This can be indicative of plantar fasciitis or heel spurs. The holiday season may bring with it the possibility of developing a stress fracture. This can be a result of walking or standing for extended periods of time, dancing at parties while wearing high heels, or rushing through stores. Mild relief may be found from general foot pain when the feet are gently massaged. If you have any type of foot pain, it is advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can properly treat foot conditions.
